Gender inequality in Toy Story 3

Sexism in children's games and movies

Mostly all movies, games, and toys children have are mainly to one gender; however the case changes when a game or movie has an inequality of a certain gender. For example, Toy Story 3, which is widely known as a children’s movie depicts mainly male toys. As evidence, Natalie Wilson, who noticed, did calculations to how many girls to boys she found in the movie. She points out that only one of the new toys is female, leaving the film with a three to one boy-girl ratio. Some people who watched the movie came to a conclusion to Natalie’s claim, that was, because, mostly all the toys belonged to a boy. And that its uncommon to find a little boy play with traditionally female toys. So because of that idea, and how the movie started off, the movie had to rely on mostly male character toys since the owner of the toys himself was male.
Natalie then argues about another stereotype within the movie is where Barbie malfunctions, which then turned her into someone that nags, and someone that is over emotional, and also hyper feminine. Because of Barbie being portrayed that way, it’s basically like saying that girls are also, hyper feminine, over emotional, and also someone that nags. Natalie Wilson drew the line where she saw a female toy out of the majority of male toys, actually participating in the movie, however the creator of the movie made Barbie of what it appears to be the everyday woman by including the characteristics of women who nag.
Games have also been affected the sexism. For example, the game “Guess Who”. “Guess who” also belongs in the subject of sexism, because women that are in the game tend to be more obvious, and much less than the men, in terms of quantity. They are depicted with long hair, which can automatically take a women out, while all the men have short hair and harder to describe. In the Huffington post article, the O’Connell’s six year old daughter, drew the line where she saw more guys than women in the game board, and got seriously frustrated, she then made her mom send a letter to the game company, however they failed to give reasons why, and sent it back in an unfriendly manner. Therefore the O’Connell’s daughter didn’t like the fact the amount of girls were so small, which is why she drew that line, and saw it as unfair.
